Workbook comparison options
WorkbookLens is designed for people who need a clear list of workbook changes without depending on a particular Excel edition or sending confidential workbooks to a comparison service.
Choose by workflow
Use it for an immediate, local comparison with no installation. Choose two .xlsx or .xlsm files and inspect the result in the browser.
One-off reviews on Windows or Mac.
Use the downloadable executable when the same comparison must run offline, on a schedule, or as part of a build process.
Best for:Recurring controls, generated exports, and retained evidence.
Microsoft's tool is useful when you need its integration with supported Office installations and its broader workbook analysis view.
Best for:Teams already using a compatible Windows Office edition.
A practical decision
Microsoft documents Spreadsheet Compare as a Windows desktop tool available with certain Office editions. That can be the right fit inside a standardized Microsoft environment. It is less convenient when a reviewer uses a Mac, does not have a compatible Office installation, or needs to invoke the comparison from an automated job.
WorkbookLens takes a narrower approach: it finds changes in workbook data and formula text, supports a stable key for row-based tables, and produces evidence that can be opened without the original comparison application.
For details about Microsoft's application and availability, see the official Spreadsheet Compare documentation.
Fit and migration
No. The browser comparator and the CLI read the workbook directly. Excel does not need to be installed for the comparison to run.
Yes. The browser workflow works in a modern Mac browser, and the downloadable CLI has builds for Intel and Apple-silicon Macs.
No single tool fits every review. WorkbookLens is deliberately centered on data, formula text, sheets, keyed rows, and portable reports. Evaluate it against the evidence your process actually requires.
